OPC benefits in show spotlight
15 Jan 2000
At the recent Interkama exhibition in Germany, ICS Triplex and Fisher-Rosemount combined to demonstrate the benefits of OPC (OLE for Process Control). An ICS Triplex Trusted fault-tolerant, triple-modular-redundant safety system was linked by OPC to a Delta V process automation system on the F-R stand.
The interest to visitors was the simplicity of the links between the two systems. The OPC Server software resides on the system host network and makes information in the Trusted TMR controller available to OPC clients in Delta V or any other OPC-compliant package. OPC client connections are made by simply dragging and dropping tag names from one system window to the other. Physical connection is by a single- or dual-redundant Ethernet link with all redundancy management designed in. By using OPC, ICS Triplex says it has freed designers from the straight-jacket of a proprietary interface.
