PLCs are saving

PVC producer European Vinyl Corporation (EVC) has managed to save around £750 000 by using Mitsubishi Q series dual redundant PLCs instead of a traditional DCS to control a new combined heat and power plant at its Fleetwood, Lancashire manufacturing site.
The new CHP plant has been designed by BP Energy to cut EVC's energy costs. The design comprises a 5MW gas turbine with exhaust ductwork to EVCs drying process, plus two gas fired boilers (supplying 15 tonnes/h steam each) and a process water treatment plant.
Titec, the systems integrator partner of Mitsubishi who fitted the control system, installed an innovative systems architecture based on dual hot standby SCADA rather than conventional DCS. This is configured from Mitsubishi's MX SCADA family and its Q2 PLCs, which are fitted with dual processors and dual power supplies.
