E.ON plans major biomass plant
30 Oct 2008
Power generator E.ON plans to build a 150MW biomass power station at the Port of Bristol. The proposed £300m Portbury Dock Renewable Energy Plant would be based on burning of wood brought in by boat.
E.ON has issued a scoping statement for the project and aims to submit a full application to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform by mid-2009. If that is successful, it expects to start construction in 2010, with the first power being produced in 2013 and full operation in 2014.
The project would be one of the largest biomass power stations in the UK. E.ON already operates one dedicated biomass power station near Lockerbie and earlier this year received permission for a 25MW station in Sheffield.
*Helius Energy has received key consent for the 65MW biomass station it plans for Stallingborough, Lincolnshire. Construction is expected to start later this year, with operations beginning by 2011. It is the first of a series of 65MW projects that Helius plans for the UK, each of which will require some 430,000 tonnes of feedstock annually.
