Manufacturers reap benefits of apprenticeships
24 Feb 2009
London - Around 70% of manufacturing companies have said that apprentices have helped them to boost overall productivity, according to recent findings.
A Learning and Skills Council-commissioned survey, which was carried out throughout January in preparation for Apprentice Week (23-27 Feb), 15% of employers are hiring more apprentices to help them through difficult economic times.
The research found that 65% of employers rely on their apprenticeship programmes to give them the skilled workers that they need for the future. It also revealed that 45% are increasing the number of apprentices they take on this year.
Ministers have made it easier for employers to take on apprentices by simplifying the process. From April 2009, the National Apprenticeship Service will lead the expansion and improvement of the apprenticeship programme.
Since January 2009, prospective apprentices have been able to apply online for job vacancies advertised by employers.
