Landmark retrofits second oven at BG Penny

Coventry, UK - Lanemark International Ltd. has installed a second oven retrofit heating system at BG Penny & Co. Ltd, a powder coating subcontractor to a range of industries. The project follows a previous Lanemark installation at the Coventry site and is set to repeat the enhanced performance via high levels of control and reliability.
As with the initial project, the latest installation is centred on burner replacement on an existing ’box oven’, but is on a significantly greater scale, according to Malcolm Penny, works manager at BG Penny.
“The larger capacity second oven sits alongside the previous installation and, similarly, handles an overhead conveyor rail from which parts are suspended,” said Penny. “It is the rapid heat up and highly accurate control that we now have with both Lanemark systems that make such a significant contribution to maintaining our commitment to quality, which is of particular relevance given the type of work which we undertake.”
The latest oven is closely linked to a powder coating process line and handles a variety of materials ranging in thickness from 1 mm to 15 cm. The wide variation calls for precise temperature parameters to be specified and maintained depending upon the job in question. The heating requirement can range from 50ºC to 220ºC and in some cases calls for a temperature variation of only +/- 3ºC.
“This target has been met every time to date, even with very temperature-sensitive products and, indeed, we have found on a number of occasions that the temperature has actually held within just 1ºC. Moreover,” said Penny, “heat up times of just 25 minutes to 190ºC help with process scheduling and throughput rates.”
The installation employs Lanemark’s FD15-C (GA), which synchronises gas and air mixture to ensure that no excess air is produced. In turn this minimises emissions and, at the same time, delivers heated air sufficiently clean to enable direct firing of the burner into the combustion chamber.
“The FD15-C (GA) is the latest design to be added to our range of oven burners,” comments Lanemark director Jeff Foster.”The set-up on the oven has also allowed us to bring the control for both the burner and the oven re-circulation and exhaust fans into a single location - whereas, previously, Penny and his team had to ascend a set of ladders onto the top of the oven to make adjustments.
“Now all controls are located at ground level and incorporate a facility to produce a print-out of the process operation to meet traceability requirements specified by some customers - such as those involved in the defence industry.”
The installation now means that all box ovens at the site are fitted with Lanemark burners, which importantly, have been installed on a retrofit basis. This has allowed BG Penny to enhance the effectiveness of existing facilities without the need to replace entire oven units.
Both systems also benefit from Lanemark BurnerCare, which supplies maintenance and servicing plans alongside 24-hour emergency call out if ever required - of particular importance at BG Penny which regularly operates a night shift.
