Gas detection specialist Crowcon has introduced a white paper explaining the ways in which CO2 poses constant hazards, particularly in the drink industry.
The company explains that CO2 can make workers unwell at concentrations as low as 0.5% and extended periods of low-level exposure may have severe consequences.
Even 7% of the toxic gas has been shown to kill in five minutes.
Higher levels of toxicity can result in asphyxiation due to the displacement of oxygen.
The white paper states there is a misconception among some companies that by monitoring oxygen levels, they are effectively protecting themselves against CO2, but reliance on this has led to fatalities.
To ensure safety, Crowcon says this kind of protection is not enough and the correct use of a CO2 personal monitor is essential.
The document also considers what makes a good gas detector for a challenging industrial environment.
